Prof. Jochen Wolf new chair

07.04.2016

With the retirement of Prof. Wolfgang Stephan, the Section of Evolutionary Biology is currently undergoing a transition. As the successor of Wolfgang Stephan, who now runs a small research group at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, Prof. Jochen Wolf has been appointed as Professor and Chair of Evolutionary Biology.

Jochen Wolf studied biology at the U. of Freiburg and received a doctoral degree in behavioral biology from the U. of Bielefeld. Subsequently, he did postdoctoral work at the U. of Cologne and the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön. Before moving to Munich he was a professor at Uppsala University in Sweden.

His research focuses on questions of evolution, in particular adaptation and speciation. He applies a wide range of methods, including field work and experimental evolution in the lab. Furthermore, he conducts large-scale genomic and transcriptomic studies. As model systems, he uses birds, marine mammals and microorganisms.
